Fired Gamespot employee launches his own site

JeffWe all know who Jeff Gerstmann is by now. If you don’t, he is responsible for creating the biggest controversy Gamespot has ever seen. He was fired right after his review for Kane & Lynch: Dead Men, which he only gave a 6/10, or as most would view it, an undesirable score.

Rumours started to circulate that Eidos Interactive, the studio behind Kane & Lynch, weren’t too fond of his review. Eidos Interactive had put big money on advertising Kane & Lynch on Gamespot’s site, therefore Gamespot wasn’t too happy with Jeff. While CNET and Gamespot both say his termination wasn’t related to the review, we all know it was.

Gerstmann’s dismissal led to a few of his fellow Gamespot co-workers quitting. After eight years of freelance reviewing for Gamespot, Frank Provo left saying “CNet is one organization I don’t want to benefit, at least not until major changes regarding disclosure and separation of advertising and editorial are made. I mean, come on, the fact that PR representatives are told the impending score of a ‘AAA’ title before the review goes up is INSANE. That needs to stop.”

Fast forward to today, where an unemployed video game journalist has nothing to do but play video games and go unpaid. So what would be the natural thing to do? Launch his own site, of course! Jeff launched GiantBomb.com along with previous co-worker Ryan Davis on March 5th. The site is still being partially built, but it’s starting to flesh out. On the site they review games, preview games, and talk about the industry as a whole (looks like we have some competition here). After the Kane & Lynch controversy, it’s easy to see that the video game industry is still young, and it might be a while before Gamespot gains back any respect. Have you ever heard of “journalistic integrity”, Gamespot?
