April 2008: Game(s) to look forward to

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

March has seen quite a few high-quality releases, with a few more to come before the end of the month. Because of this, you may think that the number of releases may slow down for April. If you think this, you are wrong and should be shot. If you think that there is only one game worth picking up coming out this month then you should also be shot. Not as much as those who think there are no games, but shot nonetheless. The number of released this month may be short but the quality means that April is most definitely a sweet month for gaming this year. There isn’t just one game coming out this month, but there is a game. A highly anticipated game. A game which, if it were released any other time than now would be game of the year, nay, century. Read on as we reveal the cracking line up for April. (more…)

Don’t hate the player, hate the industry

After buying a second-hand PSP, GoYUK Editor Dave Barlow tells us why it’s fantastic to be a cheapskate.

Cheap skateOne of the best things about jumping ship to a console fairly late in the game is that one can cherry-pick from the finest games to have been made during the console’s comparatively long life - most of which are available for a few quid, since they’re supposedly out of date! You won’t catch me buying Ridge Racer at full RRP, no sir.

As an example (and an exercise in my own smugness), here are the games which currently occupy the pile next to my bed:

  • Metal Gear Acid - £5
  • CRUSH - £6
  • Patapon - $20 (about £10.50)
  • Tekken: Dark Resurrection - with console
  • Sega Genesis Collection - with console

Now, when you consider that I paid about £70 for the PSP (with games!), we’re laughing. For under £100, I’ve bought a console which is still very relevant, as well as what I consider to be some of the top games for that system, with a few pennies spare for Loco Roco when I see it.

HD-DVD Crushed under the might of the BD Titan

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

We know this is relatively old news but HD-DVD is dead, and the arguable victor is Blu-Ray. This is a fact which still seems hard to get around, consideringLong Live The King Sony’s reputation for failed media ventures ( with Mini-Disk, Betamax and Discman first coming to mind) It was a big surprise that they pulled through and won the war. I guess it just goes to show that you can’t predict the market. It also shows that Sony has finally learnt from their mistakes and that most PS3 owners have got tired of playing Lair and have had a go at watching Groundhog Day* on their anvil. This is good news for the industry though because Blu-Ray was arguably the better format. It had larger storage space which is what really matters in this age of terabytes and memory sticks. (more…)

March 2008: Games to look forward to…

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

On this cold, wintry March come a batch of new game releases. There’s nothing we love more than a steaming batch of games, fresh from the oven, albeitEeeeyy! burnt slightly from delayed release dates and changes to the recipe.

Sorry about that analogy, that’s the result of writing an article while simultaneously watching ‘Ready, Steady Cook’. An unworthy sacrifice as Ready Steady Cook is rubbish.
