Don’t hate the player, hate the industry

March 26th, 2008

After buying a second-hand PSP, GoYUK Editor Dave Barlow tells us why it’s fantastic to be a cheapskate.

Cheap skateOne of the best things about jumping ship to a console fairly late in the game is that one can cherry-pick from the finest games to have been made during the console’s comparatively long life - most of which are available for a few quid, since they’re supposedly out of date! You won’t catch me buying Ridge Racer at full RRP, no sir.

As an example (and an exercise in my own smugness), here are the games which currently occupy the pile next to my bed:

  • Metal Gear Acid - £5
  • CRUSH - £6
  • Patapon - $20 (about £10.50)
  • Tekken: Dark Resurrection - with console
  • Sega Genesis Collection - with console

Now, when you consider that I paid about £70 for the PSP (with games!), we’re laughing. For under £100, I’ve bought a console which is still very relevant, as well as what I consider to be some of the top games for that system, with a few pennies spare for Loco Roco when I see it.

The best time to jump on the 360 bandwagon?

March 24th, 2008

Master ChiefWell, the 360’s been around for a while now and all of the big franchises have hit the market. This is epitomised in Amazon UK’s latest 360 bundle deal. For £184.98, you can get the console itself (Xbox 360 Arcade), Halo 3 and a pre-order of Grand theft Auto IV (just enough time left for you to complete the third instalment of Master Chief’s exploits before the Greatest Game Ever Made destroys your social life, then).

If you’ve been on the fence about whether to get a “next-gen” gaming console, or you think your PS3 looks lonely on its own in front of your TV, this might be the time to find out just what you’ve been missing all this time.

Hit the link and read the blurb on the page to find out how to bundle these top two titles in with your new 360.

Have More Videogames, HMV Sale!

March 24th, 2008

Well, looks like HMV are having another sale (any excuse, right?) and so far it looks better than their January sale (which, to be honest wouldn’t take a whole lot of effort). They have some half decent prices on a few games though at the moment, with Burnout Paradise for PS3 at only £29.99 and Stranglehold for Xbox 360 for £12.99.

CoD4 Map Pack Anncounced

March 19th, 2008

omglolwtf?Information regarding an upcoming multiplayer map-pack for (the 360 version of) COD4 has cropped up, in the form of an mini-page on Xbox.com. The pack will comprise of 4 new maps and will cost a whopping 800 Microsoft points (about £10). We think this is a ridiculous price-tag to slap on something so small, we don’t like micro-transactions but this is the wrong way of doing away with them! Who in their right mind would pay ten pounds of their hard-earned dosh on 4 measley maps? That works out at £2 per map, which may not sound like too much, but it all adds up. This is made worse by the fact that the Mass Effect add-on, which gives you an hour and a half of extra single player entertainment, costs only 400 points and it is made even worser by the fact that you can download many class maps for the PC version, for free!

excitementNow normally you have no doubt come to expect a certain amount of quality and comment from our posts here at GoYUK, but for this one I just haven’t got it in me. I’m too excited.

Each player can customize the character’s appearance, gender and race, among other details.

WORLD FIRST! - Sims 3 preview with In-Game Pics

March 17th, 2008

Yes, that's in-gameThe latest edition of UK gaming mag PCGamer comes with a massive 5 page preview of the Sims 3, with the first released in-game screen-shots. PCGamer is a reliable magazine which we trust which makes the fact that the graphics are horrible even harder for us to swallow. On the bright side, the though of seamless integrated communities and neighbourhoods sounds fantastic as do most of the other features outlined in the feature. Also, the pictures are from an early beta so there is still time for (much needed) graphical improvement. Here are a few crops from scans of pictures found in preview, hit the jump for the full preview uploaded kindly by the folks at InfiniteSims.com

One word… AWESOME!

Who can say PS3 sucks now, eh?

EA won’t take no for an answer

March 13th, 2008

EA are no strangers to buying out competitors, in fact that’s how they’ve come to grow so huge in the first place. You may have head about EA’s recent attempt to buy out publisher Take-Two, and their subsequent dismissal to said offer. Well now it looks as if EA are biting back as they’ve decided to take their offer straight to Take-Two’s shareholders. This is all business talk which we GameOnYou simpletons don’t really get down with but basically EA are prepared to go to great lengths to get their greasy mitts on Take-Two and thus, Grand Theft Auto.
